Case Study 2: Embassy Mission
How to strengthen a 'team' that is not a team?

Learning Solution
Team-building Away-Day

Comment from event sponsor: Your training for our group could not have been better - fantastic!

Need
Based in Brussels, the foreign Embassy's 'Mission (Department) to the EU' facilitates effective liaison between the the European Union and the home country. The Mission has some 15 staff, all experts and focused on a specific theme (e.g. energy, trade etc). They are a Department, yet do not need to work directly with each other to carry out their responsibilities. There is a need and a wish for all the staff to understand more clearly what everyone does in the department as well as build trust and encourage more open communication.

Solution
As part of a 2 day department retreat, a half-day team-building took place in the Belgian countryside. The two key themes were a) effective cross-cultural working and b) improved personal, team and department awareness through using the Belbin Team Roles model.

Results
The team realised increased motivation, efficiency and effectiveness through the session.
